Mr. Danny Kamins is a musician who plays different varieties of saxophone and clarinet, faithful to jazz as genre. He is Houston, Texas based jazz musician and composer, who likes to create experiments with different jazz forms. I had to privilege of writing about his two releases, and this one is his newer edition, done with drummer Drew Gowran, who is also responsible for the cover art of the cassette and general this release. In the meantime, on this November 2022, Danny has released with two additional artists another album, entitled “The Ojai Sessions”.
“Play Dead” is also an expected edition in which experimental challenges play a leading role. So, Danny and Drew through 4 instrumental themes enter the territory of avant-garde and free jazz, where the set atmosphere and the performing mood of the musicians, take us back to some earlier period. I mean on earlier period, where elements of avant-garde and free jazz, were placed on the USA, European and world stage.
Danny and Drew conduct the complete atmosphere, constantly changing the moods of the themes from the album. I assume that a release like this, represented an equal challenge for both musicians and potential listeners.
