Poil Ueda and S/t album is a product and edition realized during the March 2023. The music from this release done as a CD/LP and digital, is sort of experimental project, at the same time pretty interesting and unusual, where the Japanese artist Junko Ueda and French band Poil are in the main roles.
They united and musically created material that combines Japanese traditional culture and music, with elements of the progressive genre. Junko Ueda, a vocalist and satsuma-biwa player, with French musicians created the epic tale “Heike-Monogatari”, which originates from the 13th century. The composition is based on traditional epic singing accompanied by the satsuma-biwa and Buddhist Shomyo chant. And the music itself is fusion of Japanese traditional music, or better to say traditional spiritual views , with progressive and avant-garde traces. Narrative, hypnotic, spiritual chants, with many experimental including is maybe hard to explain by ordinary terminology, but the listening challenge is exceptional, and with each new analysis of the topics presented here, you get different picture than the original one, when you first encountered the prepared material. This is an equally challenging release, both for the actors themselves, and for potential listeners.
Also, this album by its example, shows what the musical confrontation of different cultures and influences looks like, which in the end will certainly cause different reactions among a large number of consumers.
