The Voodoo Drummer Duo is led by the charismatic drummer Christos Koutsogiannis, who announced his appearance on the musical international stage by releasing several singles. His partner is cellist Stavros Parginos, and the album features participation from several established musicians, some of whom have internationally recognized careers.
From the very beginning, his musical approach was unusual, authentic, and elements of horror characterized the music he performed, realized in a psychedelic manner, with a distinctive playing energy, a peculiar Greek-African approach and psychology, which could not leave the interested audience indifferent. And, yes, Voodoo Drummer brought something new with his appearance and musical thoughts.
„Hell (a)s Spells“ is an album with 9 songs, 5 original works, and 4 covers, but those covers in the version of Voodoo Drummer Duo sound completely different from the originals, practically as if they have very few or no common touchpoints. Listen to the piece „Pink Floyd in 7/8/J. Coltrane“, where themes from the songs „Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun“ and „Love Supreme“ intertwine in a magical/hypnotic/spiritual leap, and it will become clear to you how Chris Koutsogiannis thinks. But, the complete album is done in such a manner and with what I would call a spiritual/horror approach, where each track has a certain psychological and directing trajectory, as well as a way of treating the instrumental and arranging parts.
„Hell’s Spells“ brings something new and different, and whether you liked it or not, you cannot deny the originality, as well as the exceptional artistic freedom that the general approach of Voodoo Drummer Duo offers.
