After a successful decade spent with the band The O’Reillys and The Paddyhats, frontman Franz Wüstenberg decided it was time for a new chapter in his musical journey. That new beginning officially starts with the recently released album „The King’s Gambit“, which features eight songs.
While working on the material, the author isolated himself in an old countryside house, where the initial ideas for the songs that would eventually appear on the album began to take shape. It seems that this fresh start, together with a six-member band, helped him achieve the vision and goals he had in mind as the main songwriter and driving force behind the project.
„The King’s Gambit“ delivers an engaging mix of explosive rock on one side and folk, mostly Irish/Celtic in spirit, on the other, presented in a somewhat calmer, more relaxed way. The result is a very listenable and convincing set of songs, filled with strong melodies and certain songwriting and instrumental touches that echo the spirit of the 1970s and 1980s.
But, that said, this is never really a retro story. Through the ideas, the band’s performance, and the production, it becomes clear that this is a thoroughly contemporary release, one that resonates with the standards and energy of the present moment. The songs themselves differ quite a bit from one another, but the vocal and instrumental energy, along with the strong melodic sense, makes the material engaging and easy to get into.
Solid arrangements, thoughtfully balanced instrumental roles, and the professional performance of everyone involved, make the German musician’s solo debut a very convincing release.
Nakon perioda uspešne dekade provedene sa sastavom The O’Reillys and The Paddyhats, frontman Franz Wustenberg odlučuje se za novo etapu u svom muzičkom delovanju. I taj novi početak zvanično je krenuo upravo objavljenim albumom naziva „The Kings Gambit“, na kojem se našlo 8 songova. Autor se pri realizaciji materijala „osamio“ u staroj kući na selu, gde su se formirale ideje oko materijala i pesama koje bi se mogle naći na albumu. I čini se da je novi početak uz saradnju 6-to članog benda uspeo da ostvari željene prohteve glavnog autora i idejnog pokretača. „The Kings Gambit“ predstavlja izazovni miks soničnog eksplozivnog rocka sa jedne strane i folka, uglavnom irsko/keltskog pristupa sa druge, koji je postavljen na jedan mirniji i nazovimo to više opuštajući način. Kao rezultat dobijamo slušljivi i vrlo ubedljiv izveden materijal, prilično melodične pesme, i određene autorsko/sviračke zahvate koji zadiru u period 70-tih i 80-tih godina prošlog veka. Ali, nijednog momenta u ovm slučaju nije reč o nekakvoj retro priči, jer sve vreme kako kroz postavljene ideje, muziciranje kompletnog sastava, kao i produkciju, postaje jasno da je ovo savremeno izdanje, koje „vibrira“ sa standardima sadašnjeg trenutka. Same pesme su u dobroj meri različite među sobom, ali priređena vokalna i sviračka energičnost, kao i pomenuta melodičnost, čine priređeni materijal prihvatljivim i slušljivim. Dobri aranžmani, pametno postavljene uloge svakog instrumenta, kao i profesionalno odrađena uloga svih aktera, čine da je solistički debi nemačkog muzičara ubedljivo ostvarenje.
