70’s rock/various rock genres – USA
Out of Portland, Oregon, comes the band Hog. They have released an EP in 2022, and a fresh full-length, called „Blackhole“. They work in a trio formation and are faithful to the legacy that reaches into the 70s, so although they sound as modern as possible within the mentioned form, psychologically, they belong to that decade.
The band consists of very good instrumentalists, and the sound of the trio reminds one of those golden times, where sharpness, attitude, and endless guitar solos were in the foreground. „Blackhole“ consists of 8 tracks, some of which are quite lengthy, which ultimately does not affect their clearly arranged style or the manner of expressive thinking at any moment.
I would particularly praise the track „Shallow Earth“, which conceptually contains progressive elements, featuring a more elaborate arrangement form and an interesting vocal-instrumental dialogue. USA’s group convincingly redefines the 70s in its own way, showing that it can be interesting to both fans of the old and the new school of 70s rock tendencies.
